Beachhead V - A Mean 18(tm) Golf Course
by Mark Collins
.l
When Mark first created Beachhead I - The Search for Par, I don't think he knew what a sensation he had on his hands. Since then he has created three other Beachhead courses for a total of four and placed them in the public domain for all the public to play, or get hooked on. Well, Mark is back to creating and now he is doing it for Softdisk.
Beachhead V has all the fun, frolic and frustration of the previous Beachhead courses--in fact, you'll even find a few surprises. We don't know where Mark get the ideas for these courses, but we don't question his talent. We just know we love his work and we hope you do too.
TIPS FROM TOM HALL, THE GOOFY GOLFER
I've been playing Mean 18 for a while now. While the courses provided with the original Mean 18 are in their own way difficult, they are not outright cruel and treacherous. With Beachhead V, Mark Collins enters his own special domain as the Marquis de Sod, laying down his grassy torture traps.
As a veteran of the first four Beachheads, I thought I'd provide some help to those of you entering the course with an unknowing "Pebble Beach" smile on your face. Wake up, folks: this ain't Kansas anymore.
THE EIGHTEEN ENTIRELY HORRENDOUS HOLES
Here are some tips on each hole. I've named them according to the particular sort of pain they inflict.
Hole 1: "Chips Ahoy"
Just a little chip shot over water. Hole 1 is here to give you a false sense of confidence. Hit to the lower edge of the green, as it slants disconcertingly downward.
Hole 2: "Snakes Alive"
You must learn to purposely hook and slice to score well on this hole.
Hole 3: "Snakes Alive II"
More hooking and slicing.
Hole 4: "Drivin' All Night"
You'd better be in the red to get near the hole.
Hole 5: "Horseshoe! Gesundheit!"
A carefully placed chip toward the hole will win this one.
Hole 6: "Battleship Six"
Ignore the (U.S.) flag and drive away.
Hole 7: "MacMystery"
Interesting-looking tree that REALLY gets in the way. A good hook will work.
Hole 8: "Island Hopping"
Make sure you are facing the island closest to you. If it looks like you need a Driver and a good wind behind you, you're hitting in the wrong direction. Move left or right.
Hole 9: "Snakes Alive III"
Hooks, slices, and a long drive will prevail. Hit the center of the green.
Hole 10: "Chip Over Troubled Water"
Not a real problem unless you hit short.
Hole 11: "The Pendulum"
A straight shot down to the blade of the pendulum.
Hole 12: "Winding Rivers"
Good luck. Pretend you are hitting between islands. Be careful.
Hole 13: "British Bars"
Hit the ball toward the hole.
Hole 14: "WreckTangle"
Hit two long shots for par.
Hole 15: "MacMystery II"
More strange trees to contend with.
Hole 16: "Winding Rivers II"
More torture, and the green is surrounded.
Hole 17: "Snakes Alive IV"
Hooks, chips, and a bowl for a green.
Hole 18: "Pac Maniac"
More island hopping for the course's conclusion.
I hope this helps you fare better than I did on some of these holes. You'll never find it more fun to be frustrated!
